Channelling Patsy Stone and Craig Revel Horwood
When you work as a voice actor, you get used to slipping into all sorts of characters. From friendly corporate narrator to slightly unhinged gaming villain, I’ve worn many vocal hats… but this one was a new kind of delightful.
Recently, I had the joy of stepping in as the temporary voice for Shutterly Fabulous, and in doing so, managed to bag my first ITV voiceover. I know! I nearly spilled my tea when the email came through.
Shutterly Fabulous already have a wonderful, established brand voice — Craig Revel Horwood — whose “fab-u-lous” vowels are instantly recognisable. But because Craig was busy dazzling the nation on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing, my little cameo was required for the ads running elsewhere.
Enter: me. Or rather…Enter: me, politely asked to bring a touch of Joanna Lumley’s Patsy Stone to the party.
Now, let’s be clear — I wasn’t doing an impression. No cigarettes, no champagne flute, no leaning against the bar looking gloriously dishevelled. But the spirit of Patsy? The languid luxury, the delicious rhythm, the effortless “sweetie, darling” energy? That, I could play with.
So, there I was in my home studio near Oxfordshire, hair in a messy… err mess, slippers on, and trying my very best to ooze fabulousness. Showbiz, darling.
The brief was simple but wonderfully specific:
Keep the Shutterly Fabulous tone.
Keep the Craig-esque warmth.
But sprinkle in a Lumley-esque wink.
It was enormous fun — and a great reminder of how voice work often sits in that sweet spot of character-adjacent performance. Not mimicry. Not parody. Just an elegant nod to a style, blended with your own voice.
And when the finished ad popped up on ITV?Well… let’s just say my daughter heard me squeak from two rooms away.
As with many things in this industry, it may seem like a small moment. A tiny job in the grand scheme of things. But for me, it was one of those quietly meaningful milestones — the kind that remind you that creativity is full of odd detours, brilliant briefs, and surprising opportunities.
Sometimes you get cast because you’re perfect.Sometimes you get cast because the star is a Strictly Come Dancing judge on the BBC. Both are fabulous reasons, as far as I’m concerned.
And I loved every second.
